Hillary bounces back

16 Nov 2007 01:55 am

She did well in Thursday night's debate, winning by a mile I'd say, partly because it was evidently a pro-Clinton crowd. Her bad performance in Philadelphia is, for the moment anyway, expunged. Her best (if not new) one-liner was to say, in reply to a question about her campaign's playing of the gender card, that she was being attacked not because she was a woman but because she was ahead. Good stuff, and it drew cheers. (The biggest of the night, I think, except for the refusal to countenance merit pay for teachers. Avoiding that is apparently a top priority in Las Vegas, along with prompt withdrawal from Iraq.) She looked relaxed and once more in charge.

Obama at one point had the crowd laughing at him, and at another Edwards was actually booed. The laughs came when Obama--incredibly--made a complete mess of the question that threw Hillary in the previous debate. The candidates were asked whether they were in favor of driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, yes or no. In the previous debate Hillary waffled this way and that and in the end refused to answer. She was punished for that in the debate and then again by the media: how like her to squirm and evade. In this debate, she simply said she was not in favor: one word, "No." So Obama decided to fill the vacuum by failing to answer the question, at length, three or four times--just like Hillary last time. Remarkable. Asked yet again, "are you in favor?" his answer was: "Yes. [Pause.] But...", at which part of the crowd cracked up. So much for "Clear Answers To Tough Questions", which I think was supposed to be his theme for the evening. (Incidentally, Kucinich had a novel view on the subject of illegal immigrants: there is no such thing. We must all say "undocumented workers" instead. Problem solved.)

Richardson gave the best answer to the driver's license question. He said he was in favor of granting them, had done so as governor of New Mexico, and explained why. His reasons seemed quite sensible, albeit politically unsellable. On a different question Richardson slit his other wrist, and gave an answer that was the worst of the night on every measure. "Which comes first, national security, or human rights [in Pakistan]?" He himself had prompted the question, I think by getting a bit muddled in an earlier answer. Wolf Blitzer pounced, demanding clarification, and instead of correcting himself, Richardson dug himself in. Human rights come first, national security second. I think I heard one person clapping. I almost joined in out of sympathy. Imagine taking that position into the general election. Well, no need, obviously.

What turned the crowd against Edwards was his answer on the "gender card" question. There's nothing personal about my attacks on Hillary, he said, before going on to accuse her of representing all that was most foul about the Washington political scene. He might have carried a different crowd, I expect, but not this one. They did not like it. Hillary hit back by accusing him of playing the Republicans' game. Applause.

Also notable: Hillary scored points against both Obama and Edwards on health care. She pointed out that Obama's plan, unlike hers, does not provide fully universal coverage. Obama replied that hers does not either, since her individual mandate is not really enforceable. That was true but he was hesitant and ineffective. Hillary's plan at least sets out to be universal. And in case Obama might be planning to adjust his policy, she also managed to remind the audience that back in 2004, Edwards had not been for universal coverage--but she said she was pleased he had changed his mind and now agreed with her.

I don't know whether these debates matter. They shouldn't. The whole circus is ridiculous. But if they do, Hillary won. A sympathetic audience makes all the difference--but still, it was an impressive performance.

I smell a 4-pete!

4 more years of Clinton-Bush!

This was the worst run debate in recent memory. CNN gets a D. Since when do you have a pro-candidate crowd at a debate? Answer: You don't.

Comment from a Republican:
After 7+ years of Bush's arrogance, reckless spending, and damaging relationships with our international allies (I live in Russia), I am finally ready to vote for a democrat - with one exception. The only thing worse than Bush would be Hillary. I (the country) can't take another four years of Clinton lying, scandals, selling of the lincoln bedroom, last minute pardons of criminals, staff member suicides, chinese campaign contributions, and on and on. Give me Obama!!

To heather: I agree, and shame on CNN. I assume the Clinton machine (through their trademark threats and intimidation) did their best to convince CNN to make the crows considerably pro-Clinton. There's nothing stopping Clinton, she will be our next President. God help us all.

I am sure Hillary's entire team was in the audience, clapping for her, booing all the others. BTW, CNN is the Democratic Network, can you imagine Wolf Blitzen actually giving the Anointed One a hard time? Bring back Russert!

Hillary was strong, confident and has a plan. She's worked throughout her life for this moment ... I believe she'll get elected (twice) and make a very good president.

It was not so much that the crowd favored Clinton - given her national lead among Democrats, one could only expect the audience for a Democratic debate would be likely to reflect the polls.

The problem was CNN and Blitzer (what a pussycat he was, btw) allowing the crowd to chime in continually. At most debates, the audience is cautioned NOT to applaud or cheer until the end, and usually admonished for violating the stricture. I saw no effort whatever on the part of CNN to restrain the audience from participating, and it clearly demonstrated why this is not typically allowed.

On substance, Obama's got nothing. Edwards has little, and what he does have, the crowd didn't want to hear. Kucinich is nuts, Richardson is getting fat, Dodd and Biden are irrelevant. Hillary won, but the People's Choice for performance of the night goes to Mike Gravel for having the decency and common sense not to show up.

The audience: Disgrace
Wolf Blitzer: Disgrace
Pundits: Disgrace

The whole thing stunk. Bring back Russert or even Jim Leher. Blitzer should have shut the audience up and known when to shut up. He was condescending and his questions were stupid. No wonder senior advisers for Hillary are praising him. What a sham.

Some refreshing honesty. It's hard to deny that Clinton was hitting them out while her opponents reinforced their negatives. The crowd's response was reasonable, they were just following Ron's 11th commandment. How do I know she she hit out. Reactions. The press and more sensible anti Hil bloggers said it was a draw. The fully paid up members, see above, were spitting feathers and became very creative in inventing reasons why she succeeded: Incompetent Blitzer, stacked audience, softball questions, etc etc. If you want a really perfect example take a look at Sullivan's thoughts. I was expecting someone to suggest she'd spiked Obama's coffee with bumble pills. It's time for the media to get real. She's walking away with this.

"What turned the crowd against Edwards was..."

...the fact that Harry Reid packed the hall for his candidate.

I read the dannyboy2 comment in a different article. This person must really hate Senator Clinton to be moving from article to article posting the same message -- especially when the message has nothing to do with the article.

As a democrat and a pragmatist, though, I think that we should back the winner and not provide more ammunition to the Republican detractors she will be confronting next summer and fall.

it's always entertaining to see a bunch of democrats (politicians, 'journalists' and audience) pretend that their absurd ideology will somehow win them a wartime national election....but nothing will be as entertaining as the battle between giuliani and clinton. I'm all a-twitter...rudy's got common sense on his side, and the dems have no clue how to cope with that

Hillary Clinton is a liar and a phony to boot. She will say anything to become President. CNN should be ashamed of themselves for pandering to her.

The rest of the Democratic field are a bunch of lightweights as well. Doom and gloom and playing the blame game is the mantra of the Democratic Party these days.

Hillary will be exposed for the fraud she really is in the general election. She is very difficult to like and that fact will be her downfall.

Yeah, keep clapping for Hillary! As a Republican, I strongly believe she can be beaten. Thanks must be given for the other Dems shoving her further to the left than she wanted. She is set up now for a real butt kickin! Thanks also, in advance, to the left wing of a left wing party for saying they hate Hillary! You're doing the work for us and I can say this with absolutely no fear that you can stop yourselves. Now that I think about it, the far leftist probably think I'm an Edwards or Obama guy. I don't care, Rudy or one of the others will win

Please though, no more talk about stolen elections if you lose. If Hillary wins, I won't like it one bit but you won't hear me say that she "stole" the election.

The polls had Hillary at 50% of Nevada Dem voters BEFORE the debate, so perhaps the audience was simply representative of the location.

As usual Hilary's team can't

do anything honest.....guess who was in charge

of getting those people in last night....they

did not just happen to show up on their own...

my crazy aunt even fell for it,and went along

with them.

Folks that are saying Hillary can't be elected...are thinking a Mormon or guy on his third wife, can be?

Bush was so electable last election?
No, he was'nt but thanks to Ohio(& the Florida/Supreme Court before that) he squeeked by w/40-something percent.

So you see, it CAN be done.

Especially w/all the far Left & Rightees that say they'll sit this one out if it does'nt go their way!

What a surprise !!
A hall packed with teachers' union members cheers Clinton when she opposes merit pay for teachers.
Imagine that requiring teachers to be paid on their performance & results!!
You would think that this was America rather than the old Soviet U&nion
Clinton knew who her audience was.
Pander, Pander, Pander!!

I find it amusing that the Elephants are managing to keep the national media focus in Iowa on whether Hillary can win(she's ahead), when Romney is leading there at the same time that Benito Giuliani is ahead nationwide!

The fact is Iowa is about the only joint she is'nt far ahead in & this is everyone's last chance to smack her down.

Meanwhile the Dems are 3 to 1 ahead in fundraising and the Elephants are less united in who will lead their party.

Uh oh.

Wolf Blitzer stated at the beginning that he would bring candidates back to the question asked, if they did not answer.

I think he really intended to.

It turned out to be a joke, the way candidates gave mostly non-responses to practically every questioned asked, then moved on to their usual pattern of blame Bush, then get gushy over what redistribution plan would make audience members think they are in for a new nanny-state handout they did not earn themselves, then a final false promise (typical pandering) to "working families, children and in one case a 91 year old woman"

Watching audience members nod their approval and happiness as if something thoughtful was being said other than the expansion of the nanny-state, was especially stomach turning.

By the conclusion of most responses, the original question had barely been touched, if anyone could still remember it.

Wolf tried but failed to get some thoughtful responses and then got overwhelmed by the candidates' aggressiveness to keep talking about what they wanted to talk about, ending all chance to hear any quality answers, if they'd had any which they did not.

The format, questioning and responses were amateurish beyond comprehension.

Even Democrat Juan Williams a guest on Martha McCallum's show the next morning, seemed to laugh at what was referred to as a debate.

I am not a Hilary hater.

she is very good on her feet at these debate settings. She's the queen of the quick debate soundbite, all vetted prior by her pollsters and advisers.

She's also a very smart woman, no doubt.

But this packing of the crowd with pro Hilary heckling goons, and her (to what to me is most amusing) headmistress glare when she's taken to the woodshed for being the ultimate insider and favorite of corporate interests is just too funny.

Hilary as "change"? too funny.

She's also the liberal version of the "Nanny State", just like the evangelical Puritan loons on the right, she also knows "what is BEST for you".

because it takes a village. With her heading it.

I'm going to hurl chunks now.

Hi Kevin, you are right - I did post similar comments in a couple of articles. Actually today is the first time I have posted any political comments, and thought it would interesting to participate in more than one place. Sorry you had to suffer the indignity of reading my comments more than once.
You are also right that I can't stand Hillary. Of course that gives me lots of company since I understand that 50% of the electorate say they absolutely would not vote for her in a general election. As Obama would say - she's a divider not a uniter..
But seriously, weren't you a bit offended by how Blitzer and his crew seemed to stack the deck for Hillary - including packing the audience with pro-Hillary people, and then allowing them to boo any time anyone (especially Edwards) had any disagreement with Hillary.
Kind regards,

For those who think the hall was packed, a simple fact. Nevada voters favor Clinton 51% to all over the lot. If you let a representative group of Nevada Democrats into the hall, you get a Clinton crowd. It's that simple. And they booed negative stuff and laughed when Obama the Great began to babble about driver's licenses, the way he had claimed Clinton did. It doesn't take a conspiracy.

Full disclosure: I am a life-long Republican.
To Democrats, thank you for once again trotting out these neo-socialists to lead your party.
Your candidates have a large problem with answering direct questions or holding fast to any, I mean any, principle other than trying to get back the presidency. Say anything, do anything candidates will assure another Republican victory! Thank you!!!

CNN is part of the Clinton campaign. Isolate Edwards on the far right side of the stage, give Clinton all the time she needed to get her point across, and let her partisan members of the crowd
boo and ridicule anyone who says anything about her. Got to hand it to the Clinton crew. Magnificent. Want to see a real debate, you need to go back to William Buckley's Firing Line

I too am fed up with George W. Bush. This country so much needs to move forward. With Clinton, the country instead, will move back.

In 2000, after 8 years of President Bill Clinton, Republicans sought the nostalgia of George H.W. Bush's presidency, so they marched in step and his son was elected President. But son and father are not the same. Hillary Clinton, the wife, is not Bill Clinton. We try and revive the past at our own peril.

Obama's charisma and common sense approach reminds me of Kennedy or Reagan. Clinton scares me. Cheney scares me. Agnew used to scare me. Bush II doesn't scare as much as he disappoints.

I am with dannyboy2. Give me Obama!

"What turned the crowd against Edwards was his answer on the "gender card" question."

Hardly. Everyone in that audience knew who they were voting for a month ago, and the Clinton's like to 'block seat' a favorable group, in order to perform as they did.

Love to see the video of the audience, because you'll find some familiar faces. HRC's team knows they can't hold up signs of when to clap and boo, so they just have a group of people do it for them.

One of the many reasons that I proudly support Hillary Clinton is that it's so thoroughly entertaining to watch idiots go ape-sheet.

No way Hillary won. I don't see how she's going to get votes. She's like a robot. Everything that comes out of her mouth is a carefully crafted soundbite.

The only one who went into any specifics was Obama.

How is it that somebody "wins" because they stacked the audience? Her answers were okay, but Biden was clearly better. Richardson and Dodd were pretty good too. But Hillary has plants in the audience to boo down Edwards and Obama, and so she's considered a success. Typical amoral Clintonism; don't worry about fair play. Just do anything to win.

And that's why if she wins, this country will be more divided than ever. Yes -- more divided than it even is now. People on the right -- as well as the far left -- don't trust her as far as they can throw her.

Republicans are really pleased that Hillary is going to be the nominee.

But MSM, especially CNN, should really apologize for the sorry way they ran the debate. There was a pro-Hillary crowd (maybe not CNN's fault) that would not restrain themselves from interfering in the debate (clearly CNN's fault - they have to enforce ground rules). Also, Wolf played to Hillary's strong suit - very unprofessional. What a shameful mess. Why would a serious person watch such a thing?

This talk about Hillary stacking the audience sounds like Hillary's campaign trashing Russert after the Philly debate. The person that has a bad night always wants to blame somebody else. Regarding the audience, if you re-look at the opening of the debate you'll see that Obama was the only candidate to get a standing ovation during the introductions. By the end of the debate they were booing him. Don't blame the audience. Nuff said.

I also don't see how Clinton won the debate. I don't think that the hall was "stacked" with her supporters, Obama's hypocrisy deserved to be laughed at, and Edward's negativism dodgy answers deserved to be booed.

I think that either Biden and Dodd gave the best answers out of anybody. Unfortunately, they're both too vanilla to get the support they deserve.

Oh, and the debate led me to question the intelligence of Edwards and Obama. They HANDED her redemption on the driver's license for illeagal immigrants question. Wolf asked for a yes or no. They both proceeded to to stumble all over the place just like she did last time! Meanwhile, she responds with a simple "no" and comes out on top.

I don't think that Hillary will win the national election, but her competitors are weak, weak candidates and wouldn't stand a chance. I'm a Republican and don't want to see any of the Dems in office, but I'd hope Hillary keeps her lead if I did.

I watched and waited. I watched and waited. I waited for Mrs Clinton to explain what her experiences that qualify her for president have been. We will never know I guess because she doesn't have a significant amount of experience unless you count "fighting for", "leading", "voting for", "led the fight for", "been for this all my life", "have plans for", and other political resume builders as experience. I don't.

As I see it her experience revolves around a huge healthcare system takeover debacle and being in the middle of or the cause of every major scandal that hit the Clinton White House on a regular basis. H***, her only friend committed suicide in the middle of one of her scandals.

And give her makeup person an Emmy. It was hard to believe that she is a 60 year old woman.

Women one day will figure out, I hope, that every time she says something to the effect "Support me. I am a woman. I am a victim like you." she insults the intelligence of every one of them.

Look behind the curtain.

As a Democrat, I cannot vote for anyone who voted to authorize the invasion of Iraq. It's seems like everyone is forgetting Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton,John Edwards and Chris Dodd voted for this war.The one most foreign policy experts describe as the greatest foreign policy blunder in a generation.
When Joe Biden says that the war in Iraq is destablizing Pakistan and Afganistan, he must be reminded that he share responsibility for what's happening in those countries.
Finally, anyone viewing these debates to select a candidate must be discourage from voting.

It is ridiculous that a lot of you complain about the crowd. Not only do you naively expect for your news to be un-biased, but you hold actual voters (in the form of audience at the debate) to be objective when they share the room with the next president of our country (who ever it might be)

Shame on you.

The only people who deny Hillary won last night, are idiot GOP members, or fake Democrats who would rather see Hillary fail then see the country saved by a Democrat.

Joe Biden is the best candidate, but Hillary will and should win the nomination. At that point Democrats who dislike her will have to make a choice...Hillary with her few flaws, or Rudy Giuliani with his millions of flaws. Democrats who are so selfish that they either don't support Hillary, or turn traitor and vote against her, aren't real Democrats. Plain and Simple.

Hello All,

Whether you like it or not, Hillary Clinton WILL be our next President. Those of you that HATE her don't even know WHY you hate her! Think about it. She is smart, articulate, and if you took a moment to LISTEN to what she has to say, you may think differently.

Bush 2 has destroyed our reputation in the international arena, and after years of budget surplus has brought our nation to its knees with the most horrific BORROWED spending policies ever.

Wake up! He continues to veto important DOMESTIC bills including an important water project, while SPENDING nearly a trillion dollars on a senseless war that CAN NOT be won.

Stop your whining about Hillary. You will learn to love her, and she will be a two term president with the highest approval ratings in modern history. (ever wonder why your buddy GW has the LOWEST approval ratings in history??

...It's the economy stupid

Half the country or quite possibly, more than half the country hates her. That's really going to be a great 4 years to look forward to. Then, when she is a one-term president, we'll have Jeb Bush to be the next president. This Clinton-Bush thing has got to stop.

Maybe they're all related to each other, kissing cousins

Clinton won hands down.
Of course, the millions who hate her find every excuse under the sun to minimize her success.

Even the word "bitch" is now circulating, thanks to John McCain, who has unwittingly given the DEMS a golden gift that will keep giving until election day.

To write things such as HRC had a success while the public is on her side is nothing more than being hackish. Did the writer speak with every person in the crowd and take a poll, or what?

People still don't get it. The harder you hit the Clinton team, the stronger it gets.

If the GOP continues to implode at this rate, then Mrs. Clinton could well capture fourty states in the GE in 2008.

Contrived, scornful, perpetually coached, unqualified for anything other than bimbo erruption coordinator.
One would not want to choose a pilot based on the fact that they have been riding in the plane for 35 years.
55% say they would not vote for hillery under any circumstances but most say they would vote for a woman---what does that say for the Hillery campaign.
What are we Dem's doing...

I'm having buttons made in Seattle that say:
"JUST VOTE FOR THE BITCH"
When she's running against Romney/Muissiani/Bloomberg
she WILL get the most votes & in the right places.

How about a button that says:
LIFE'S A BITCH! DON'T VOTE FOR ONE!
