A new, tougher Obama?

30 Apr 2008 03:41 pm

So, he has a killer instinct after all--or at least some limit to his forbearance. Obama's response yesterday to Jeremiah Wright's flurry of appearances, and especially to the pastor's speech at the National Press Club on Monday, was pretty steely. He called what Wright had to say "a bunch of rants". He said he was disgusted, and looked it. In contrast to his earlier and widely noted speech on race, in which he said he could never repudiate Wright the man, this time he just went ahead and did so.

We shall see whether this works. Wright isn't going away. His NPC appearance showed that he is a narcissist as well as a racist demagogue, so there will be more. (So much, by the way, for taking his sermon snippets out of context. Wright has embarrassed not just Obama but also many moderate sympathisers who felt the reverend should be cut some slack. When asked about the government conspiracy to spread AIDS among the black population, he did not apologize for getting carried away; he affirmed that this was his view, saying that the government was capable of anything.) Perhaps Obama has now separated himself, but perhaps not.

It is worth noting that Wright did not say anything new on Monday; he did not say anything that Obama had not already heard. Plainly, Obama was angry not about what Wright said, but about the fact that he has chosen to keep on saying it--to the obvious detriment of Obama's faltering campaign. Who wouldn't be angry under those circumstances? But it is too late for Obama to say that the man's views are so offensive in themselves that they put him outside the realm of decency. If that is true now, as Obama seemed to be saying yesterday, it was true weeks ago.

This is an inconsistency in Obama's evolving position on Wright, though it might not matter. If the good pastor continues to ventilate, many people will continue to ask whether Obama was right ever to have given him the benefit of the doubt--and this is a fair question. On the other hand, giving an old friend the benefit of the doubt is an admirable and understandable trait, especially if you do not do it without limit and remain capable of seeing the error of your ways. As I say, we shall see.

Meanwhile, the gas-tax holiday. Was this a good issue for Obama to pick a fight on? I doubt it. With Clinton and McCain both agreeing on this admittedly stupid, pointless gimmick, Obama has set himself the task of explaining why a few months of slightly cheaper gas (let's say, 9 cents a gallon cheaper--assuming that the incidence of the 18 cent tax is split 50-50 between producers and consumers) is such a bad thing. He is right on the substance: it solves nothing. But the problem is that his own larger ideas on the issue are no better.

The political punch in the way Clinton is spinning this proposal is that it demonizes the oil companies, second only in popularity in this country to demonizing the health insurers. It has to be a winner. And how can Obama object? He defers to no-one in his willingness, this present case excepted, to demonize both. His argument that the McCain/Clinton gas-tax idea is the usual Washington nonsense is true, but hard to square with his own litany on excess profits, wicked corporate interests, the gouging of consumers and the rest.

I understand we are in the political sphere but step back from the fishbowl a little bit and examine the Wright situation in terms of a friendship gone bad. Obama gave the man an openning through which he could redeem himself and Wright chose not to go through that openning.

Obama has known this man for 20 years. So since he was in his mid 20's until now. Both he and Wright have evolved over that time.

Wright forced Obama's hand in a way that Obama to his credit never did to Wright. There is an honorable quality to Obama that rarely gets displayed in politics.

We all have friends who embarass us but we hold onto them because they mean something to us apart from the occassional embarassment. Obama tried to hold onto that but Wright stung him anyway and in a manner that ignored everything Obama held dear about the relationship in the first place.

Obama came across as the better person. Relationships are messy things. And the prism of politics only clouds the complexity.

It's sad that reality is imitating art. Why don't you just ask the question that John Steward jokingly asked Senator Obama. "Is he a secret black muslim or radical planning to enslave the white race." Because that's all this inquisition amounts to! There are thousands of lives wasted in Iraq b/c the media was afraid to ask tough questions, but now it's trying to redeem itself by asking hard hitting questions about a pastor's influence over a presidential candidate. Nothing Senator Obama says or does on this matter will satisfy you b/c he can't do the one thing that would stop all of this nonsense: stop being black!

Take away 20 to 25 million black voters, and take away another 17 to 20 million young voters. Take away another 10 to 15 million educated white voters. And you will be left with the remaining voters from an approximate 110 million pool of registered voters to be shared between macCain and Hillary. And tell me Obama is not a force to reckon with. Name one presidential candidate in the entire history of United States of America with 1.5 million registered contributors. You name me just one who was or is like Barack with that volume of contributors.

Obama is so slick, but here the evidence he can not deny. On the TV program THE VIEW, Obama declared that Reverend Wright accepted that his view were inappropriate and mischaracterized. Then weeks later Wright goes on a national Hate America Press Tour? Just goes to prove how immature and green Obama is. And this is being generous. Watching this video one can only conclude Obama simply lied. Go ahead check it out yourselves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6J7yJ9R5p0

The press obsession with this is, as far as I'm concerned, race baiting. It's not going away because of editorial decisions you make, & the only explanation I can find for the double standard that Obama is treated with is race. Try to justify it if you want but at least take some responsibility for what you write.

Immature at 46?? I think that's a pathetic statement by somebody who wants to make this situation something that it is not.

I gave Obama great credit for not throwing Reverend Wright under the bus in his speech in PA. I also give him great credit for having the stones to do so when Reverend Wright opted to behave the way he did this weekend.

The nasty, hateful comments I read on these blogs truly leave a very bad taste in my mouth for where we are as American people.

Hey look at this. The relationship that actual voters actually say concerns them the most is McCain's relationship with Bush. If only we could get some &#&@&$ press coverage of that. But I guess voting for Bush's agenda--including on the issues where he supposedly has such great maverick-y credibility, like torture--& recycling his policy proposals pales is "not a story," in contrast, where we apparently still have months & months of playing "is Obama a secret black militant or soft on black militants & the Weather Underground" games. Who exactly decides what's a story that's "not going away" & which deserves no coverage, again? Surely not the people who write & publish these stories.

This sleazy democratic primary ought to be titled “Lefties Gone Wild!” or “Identity Politics Gone Wild!”

I’m actually stunned, staggered, flabbergasted…at how incredibly inept, comically inane, this theater of the absurd called the Democratic Party has become.

They are facing an opponent who they are desperately trying to tie to a President with an approval rating lower than a Barack Obama bowling score. And they may lose because they keep rolling gutter balls.

They have spent a half decade pulling America away from support of taking the fight to the terrorists where they live and train. They had America believing their account of the war.

And then the economy went into a pretty rugged slowdown.

AND…with a chance at a waltz onto a freshly paved road to the White House based on all that….they fall into a sinkhole of their own making. ONLY THE DEMOCRATS are inept enough to completely blow an election they would have had to otherwise TRY to lose.

Yet, they have turned over every rock to try to find the MOST offensive leftist to crawl out from under….and parade in front of the voters and turn them off completely with this vermin.

Gloria Frankensteinem, the hideous and wrinkled shrew of man-hating fame and her equally hideous spawn of decadence Nora Zephron.

Jerepariah Wright, Rev. Meeks, Louis Farrakhan, Rev. Moss…a veritable Murderers Row of bile and hatred from a uniquely Black Marxism perspective.

William Ayers and his mentally deranged wife BloodOrange Dorhn.

The Tigress of Tuzla having 60’s bad acid flashbacks of sniper fire under tangerine skies and Michelle Obama on a complete quaaludes downer suggesting everyone in the whole country is mean, slothful, lazy and moving in very, very slow motion.

The Democratic Party is a South Park episode, cartoonish and yet fascinating in a high speed, twisted metal and broken glass car wreck sort of way.

Here's what I don't get RE: Wright and his comments about where AIDS comes from...

Did I miss something and we now know definitively how the AIDS virus started? I haven't heard that. To my knowledge --which admittedly could be incorrect-- it's a mystery. So why is it such an awful thing to say the US Government created it? Not that I think that (or don't), I really don't think about it much. I just wonder why is the concept so radioactive. It makes Andrew Sullivan nearly burn white with rage at the suggestion. Still, considering Tuskeegee went on into THE 70's, given admitted government funded bio-terror experiments, given CIA experiments in the 60's like MK Ultra, etc...why not?

Maybe they released it unintentionally? Maybe they released it on purpose and it affected people they didn't expect? Certainly the US Government has a pretty horrible record when it comes to thinking through the consequences of something.

Bakum: The reason why it's so radioactive is that a BLACK man said it. You notice that the horrific things that Hagee and Reverand Falwell and countless other right wing pastors have said aren't nearly as "radioactive" even though they're equally as offensive, dead wrong, intolerant and nutty? Because these other guys are white.

It's that simple.

scire summed it up best. some things are really that simple. so sad.

B=Bravery (stood up against the war in Iraq)
A=Audacity (he has the audacity to hope)
R=Risktaker (he gave a speech on race)
A=Awe (he is in awe of his beautiful wife)
C=Change (he wants to break away from the past)
K=Knowledge (his knowledge of self, is inspiring)

O=Open-Minded (he is open to many ideas)
B=Brilliant (he speaks brilliantly)
A=Articulate (he knows how to express himself)
M=Mature (has not played the political games)
A=Accomplished (Harvard Law Review...WOW)

Nena, that's a nice write up about the characteristics of Obama.

But the question still looms ahead, WHAT HAS OBAMA EVER DONE TO PROVE ANY OF THE THINGS HE SAYS?

He says he can do things, bridge the gap, etc. etc. but what has he actually DONE?

All through his negligible experience as a IL senator, he ALWAYS voted liberal, ALWAYS voted for a tax break for the oil companies, what in heavens sake IS he doing different, or better, except for rhetorics????

Sue: I have a question for you -- can you list the accomplishments of Hillary Clinton? 'Cause I live in NY State, and I can't think of one substantive thing she's done for this state. However, I can remember lots of pandering when she was running for Senate along the lines of some of the schtick she's got going now.

And remember, her divisiveness (which still seems to be her style, at least on this campaign) was what put the kabosh (sp.?) on universal healthcare twelve years ago. Her failure in the 1990s is part of the reason we're in this healthcare quandry today. So why should we trust her again?

If you have answer to these questions, please share them with me, because I honestly can't see where she has a huge record of accomplishment to tout either. People take what she says about her experience on faith, it seems to me. Do you, or can you give me an actual list to counter my skepticism?

Sue, assuming you're one of those who've ignorantly swallowed Clinton's "experience" lies, when you talk about Obama's "negligible" experience, you need to wake up and realize that first lady is not an elected or official position. It is an honorary title for an individual who happens to be married to an elected official.

Obama was an elected official for FOUR YEARS before Clinton ever held a position of responsibility in any government. Yes, she has a whopping three more years as a US Senator than he does. Whoop-de-doo. She also has voted WITH BUSH on nearly every war, torture, and anti-civil liberties issue, all in the name of "not appearing weak". Way to stand up for those principles, Hillary!

The essential Hillary Clinton:

1. She finally admitted she knowingly lied to the American people about the Tulza incident. She lied for the purpose to prove her non-existent Commander-in-Chief qualifications. She lied to deceive the American people. If she lies about something that she knew to be false, and had a good chance of being caught in the deception, she would be willing to lie about anything for gain. I know of no such incident of knowingly lying to the American people in an attempt to deceive us by Obama. He has been truthful and more honest than any other candidate for the presidency I have ever seen since 1968.

2. She made hundreds of similar promises to the people of NY State during her two uncontested elections. She delivered on NONE of them. She is widely seen by NYS voters as someone who will say anything to get elected.

3. Anyone who has followed this campaign and observed her, has noticed that her personality is almost schizophrenic. One day angry, one day speaking like one of the girls, the next day being a policy wonk, the next day creating false scenarios ["I passed the Commander in Chief test, McCain has, Obama has not"] that show that she doesn't care about health care, or the war in Iraq, or her endless support for the Bush sabre rattling against Iran [the Kyl-Lieberman Amendment] as according to HRC McCain is qualified to be president and Obama is not. She has demonstrated time and time again that she is a militarist, corporatist and has no regard for the American people. Remember how she dismissed women with disdain when her husband was running for president, "What do think, I'm going to stay in the kitchen and bake cookies?"

3. She is always willing to disinform or misinform the American people. "I received more votes than Sen Obama in Michigan." Of all the democratic candidates her name was the ONLY one on the ballot in Michigan.

4. Whose campaign brought the initial video loops to the medias attention on March 12? The Clinton Campaign. Do the research. And why was a tangential story pushed by HRC for well over a month before Wright made his public appearances? HRC's campaign ARRANGED for the invitation to the National Press Club on Monday! Guilt by association and McCarthyism are the newest and most scurrilous part of the stated "kitchen sick" attack campaign.

Is this the person people want to president? A power mad, liar and deceiver? She will seek to expand the Imperial Presidency that Bush and his dead enders and thugs have been creating over eight years.

I hope the American people have their eyes and ears open. If they do, they will reject a candidate who has absolutely nothing to recommend her.

Mr Crook,

Speaking as a fan, and in light of your generally excellent understanding of economics and politics, I'm totally shocked at this paragraph:

"Meanwhile, the gas-tax holiday. But the problem is that his own larger ideas on the issue are no better."

WOW! Let's see, for starters, "do nothing at all" beats the gas tax holiday by a mile.

He wins the substance and the politics on this one. Via Ambinder, here's the 60-second ad on it he has in heavy rotation right now:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHtFSi99shk

This is a great issue for him, the campaign should go and go and go with this - the Clinton and McCain can't back down at this point.

The gas tax holiday is an awesome issue for Obama to take a stand on if, you accept the basic premise of Obama's run for office at this time, which is that the American people are actually smart enough to see whats going on (and several studies HAVE shown that americans, as a group, are very aware of marketing and very savy about it, but it's fun and usually harmless and maybe that new chip might taste good)and we know that this election really matters(think Germany 1932. He shows a level of respect for us that no amount of right wing agit-prop can obfuscate or deny.

if you break with somebody because of his priests words then you have to break with the whole world.

DEMOCRATS WANT OBAMA TO DROP OUT NOW!

Update: 56% who heard speech less likely to vote for Obama? Obama negatives
rose 11pts, more than half the voters will nto vote for obama! His once National lead dropped 10pts and now losing in IN. Once 25 pts ahead in NC now just 5pts-

Obama's Chickens Come Home to Roost

Obamas support and defense of the Rev Wright stated in his speech“Wright is like an uncle you love and respect” As imperfect as he may be, he has been family to me for so many years, I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community” Obama is now declaring himself shocked and disappointed at Wright's unrepentantly racist and anti-American views? Obamas obviously support his feelings of anti-America and white hatred that the church endorses to stay for 20 years also why a parent would continue to raise their young daughters in that atmosphere Obama can no longer plausibly claim innocence in this matter, because he is the one who has encouraged Wright by trying to excuse and explain his views. All of this is why it is no use for Obama to backpedal from his association with Reverend Wright, or to denounce him now, six weeks too late. It was Obama who sought to provide the Reverend Wright with immunity from criticism--and he can't complain when the reverend tries to take full advantage of that immunity. This is the final collapse of the noble promise of the Obama campaign. The man who had once put himself forward as the candidate who would transcend racial politics once and for all has ended up legitimizing a Christian equivalent of Louis Farrakhan--and injecting him into the American political debate. Wright “Calls for Justice and Repair,” followed a statement in which he declared that “The Biblical principle of true repentance is that the offended party is given compensation to make up for that which has been stolen from them, the losses that have been inflicted upon them and their families.” A reparations plan for blacks could extract several trillion dollars from American taxpayers’ pockets. THERES ABSOLUTLY NO CHANGE WITH OBAMA

Go Steve, Peter and Marc!

How about Democrats who want Hilliary to drop out! Count me in. The pandering is getting so disgusting. She will do or say anything to anyone and never follow through. It is as if she carried the USA checkbook with the only working pen.

Mr. Crook, the gas tax issue is legtimate and right on Obama's part. You don't want to give the larger population of the US the credit to think it through. you may be correct that only sound bites and pandering get through to many. How sad.

Please check out "The Truth vs Barack Obama"

I saw this today, and HAD to share it with everyone. It is just a brilliantly researched and written list of inconsistencies with several of Obama's stories. I think it should be done for ALL three candidates, but I guess this is a good way to start at finally looking at the candidates with some honesty.

http://savagepolitics.com/?p=317

If everyone who ever went to church, synogogue or mosque were held accountable for the words of their religious leaders--houses of worship would be empty. I don't always agree with what various pastors have said over the years, but I am true to my faith and my church, as many, many people are to theirs. I've heard church members complain about their pastors a zillion times, but they don't leave the church--rather they are longsuffering. As Christians we practice forgiveness--and tolerance. Forgiveness and the redeeming power of love are the keys to Christianity. Do we condemn all Catholics for remaining in the Catholic church after the revelations of sex abuse among priest? No--of course not. We do not hold all Catholics accountable for the actions of hundreds of priests--and we shouldn't. The fact that Catholics, why abhorring the actions of these priests, have remained true to the Catholic church is understandable. The fact that Obama remained true to his church and focused on the good the church did in the community, even though he abhorred what Wright said, is also understandable. Rev. Wright isn't the whole of Trinity Church, the African American Church or the United Church of Christ any more than sexual-predator priests are the whole of the Catholic Church. There are 8 thousand members of Trinity Church with several ministries that help the community--that is why Obama remained a member for 20 years--not for Rev. Wright, but for the larger church community and outreach--for gospel (the good news) and good works of the church. Rev. Wright has mistakenly represented himself as "the church" when he is merely a mortal man, a servant of the Lord. Rev. Wright has mistakenly represented himself as the African American church, which also is not true. Rather, Rev. Wright is a prideful man who is full of himself--and envious of Obama. Obama, on the other hand, has absorbed the true meaning of all faiths: that we are to love one another.

For the record, I'm a woman so this is not a sexist blog. Real toughness doesn't mean acting like adolescent bullie, or being patronizing toward the life styles of working class people or any of the other affectations Hillary has taken on recently. Toughness isn't a pose for a photo-op--it is something deep inside--developed over time. Muhammud Ali was a great boxer because he was tough enough to take hit after hit--he was strong enough to take the hits and keep moving, light on his feet. He let his opponents wear themselves down with punch and jab after punch and jab--until after they'd worn themselves out--he delivered the knockout blow. Bam! "Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee." Hillary postures, panders and poses like a tough girl. She is envious of the "something extra" the quality of strength at Obama has, the quality that enables him to be calm under pressure, the quality and depth of character that eludes the pandering Hillary. She can punch and jab, punch and jab and wear herself out--but like "the Champ, Ali"--Obama will deliver the final, lasting knockout. One..two..three...four...

How can any reasonable person be proud of Obama for not throwing Pastor Wright under the bus weeks ago, but somehow proud that he did now? Did Pastor Wright say anything new at the Press event? No, he basically repeated himself, except that he added a truthful comment about Obama. He indicated that the much-lauded "Speech" delivered weeks ago by Obama was disingenuous. He described it as a predictable and necessary
manuever by a politician...and he was correct. It was those comments that got Obama fired up and angry. Obama was dishonest to the American people in his earlier statements. He was trying to provide cover for his Pastor.....and in effect, himself. Pastor Wright had the bad taste to tell the truth, and left Obama looking like a liar and a phony. When it became obvious that Pastor Wright had exposed Obama's motivation as a self-serving charade, Obama suddenly found his "courage". How noble.

He can win this policy round vs Clinton if he does a very simple thing: point out that her "Gas Tax Holiday" doesn't harm the oil companies now - it takes no revenue away from them. It actually helps the oil companies in the future, by burning up more fuel, which allows them to charge higher prices. So who's actually supporting the oil companies here?

I also believe that Sen. Obama's position on the Tax Holiday helps him. Much of the commentary on this proposal, which has been almost uniformly negative, has mentioned that Sen. Obama is the only one of the candidates not pandering on this issue. It is a small issue, but very clear.
